Software Alternatives Finder is a browser extension published by TopAlternativesTo. This policy explains, in plain terms, exactly what it does and does not do with your data.
The short version
The extension does not collect, store, sell, or transmit any personal data. It makes no tracking or analytics calls. Everything it does happens locally, in your browser, on your device.
What it does
The extension carries a built-in list of software tools and the address of each tool’s comparison page on topalternatives.to. When you visit a website, the extension compares the site’s domain against that list, entirely on your device. If it matches, it shows a small, dismissible link to that tool’s alternatives page. When you open the extension’s popup, it reads the current tab’s address to show a relevant link.
Permissions, and why
- activeTab — so that, when you click the extension icon, it can read the current tab’s domain to show the matching alternatives link. It is only used at that moment and is not stored.
- storage — to remember your preferences locally (whether the on-page suggestion is enabled, and which suggestions you have dismissed). This stays on your device.
- Site access — the extension runs only on the specific tool websites in its built-in list, to show the suggestion there. It does not run on other sites.
Data collection
None. No personal data, browsing history, or usage data is collected, logged, or sent anywhere. The extension has no backend server. The only network activity is the normal page load that happens when you choose to click a link to topalternatives.to.
