HeyGen turns a script into a talking avatar video. You pick a stock avatar or clone your own, paste in a script or generate one, and it renders a video with lip-synced speech in dozens of languages. For ad teams, the pitch is producing UGC-style or spokesperson ad variants at volume without booking a shoot.
The catch is the credit system layered on top of the seat price. Every paid plan includes a monthly credit pool, and different outputs draw from it at different rates: standard Avatar III video costs 3 credits per minute, the higher-fidelity Avatar IV and V models cost 20 credits per minute, dubbing without lip sync costs 2 credits per minute, and full lip-synced translation costs 5 credits per minute. Video Agent, HeyGen's prompt-to-video tool, also runs at 20 credits per minute. Heavy use of the pricier avatar models burns through the pool fast, which is the source of most user complaints about the pricing feeling unpredictable.

Who it's for
- ✓ Agencies producing many spokesperson or UGC-style ad variants across languages
- ✓ Teams that need a talking avatar fast without a video shoot
- ✓ Marketers running localized ad campaigns who need dubbed translations
Who should look elsewhere
- ✗ Teams that need predictable flat-rate costs regardless of which avatar model they use
- ✗ Anyone who needs phone support without a large annual commitment
Pros
- + Fast turnaround from script to finished video, useful for testing many ad angles
- + Wide language support for translated and dubbed ad variants
- + Custom digital twin avatars available even on lower-cost plans
Cons
- – The credit system makes real monthly cost hard to predict since Avatar IV/V and Video Agent burn 20 credits per minute versus 2-5 credits per minute for standard avatars, dubbing, and translation
- – Trustpilot reviewers report unused credits expiring with no refund and cancellation instructions that don't work
- – Support quality is inconsistent, with reports of tickets bounced across multiple agents and enterprise phone support gated behind a $25,000 minimum annual commitment

What you pay for
You pay a flat monthly seat price for a bucket of monthly credits, and different features draw down that bucket at different per-minute rates. The starting paid plan is disclosed at $29/month, but Enterprise pricing is quote-only. Real monthly cost depends on how much of your work uses the pricier features (Avatar IV/V, Video Agent) versus the cheaper ones (Avatar III, dubbing), and extra credits can be bought as you scale.
At about $29/month to start, it is one of the cheaper options in AI Ad Creative Generators.

HeyGen FAQ
Is HeyGen free?+
There's a free plan with 3 videos a month, capped at 1 minute each, using stock avatars and one custom digital twin. It's enough to test the product, not to run ad production.
Why did my HeyGen bill come out higher than the plan price?+
Every paid plan includes a monthly credit pool, and features draw from it at different rates: Avatar IV, Avatar V, and Video Agent cost 20 credits per minute, while translation and dubbing cost 2 to 5 credits per minute. Running out means upgrading, buying more credits, or waiting for the next cycle. Reviewers on Trustpilot describe this as a source of billing surprises.
Does HeyGen support multiple languages for ad localization?+
Yes. The Creator plan and up support 175+ languages, and Business/Enterprise plans add SSO and multi-workspace controls for teams localizing at scale.
