What is Chargebee?

Chargebee is subscription billing software that handles recurring invoicing, usage-based metering, dunning, and the checkout and customer portal around it. You wire it to your product to charge customers on a schedule, on usage, or a mix of both, and it takes over retrying failed payments, prorating plan changes, and generating invoices.

The billing product itself is free until your business crosses $250K in cumulative billing, at which point Chargebee starts taking 0.75% of what you process. Beyond core billing, Chargebee sells CPQ (quoting), Revenue Recognition, and a retention/growth product as separate line items, so a full setup usually means stacking several of its products rather than paying for one.

Who it's for

  • SaaS companies past early revenue that need hybrid subscription plus usage-based billing on one invoice
  • Finance teams that want dunning, revenue recognition, and CPQ from a single vendor instead of stitching tools together

Who should look elsewhere

  • Very early-stage teams who want to see every future cost up front without asking sales
  • Teams that want one flat bill instead of a revenue-based percentage that grows with them

Pros

  • + Free to start and stays free until $250K in cumulative billing
  • + Handles subscription, usage-based, and hybrid billing on the same invoice
  • + Deep feature set: dunning, revenue recognition, CPQ, and a retention product all live under one vendor

Cons

  • The 0.75% overage fee is revenue-based, so your bill grows as your business grows; reviewers describe it as a 'success tax' that gets steeper the more you scale
  • Enterprise and several add-on products (CPQ, Revenue Recognition tiers, Growth Enterprise) are quote-only, so total cost isn't visible until you talk to sales
  • Analytics and dashboard customization are limited according to user reviews

Chargebee Billing has 3 tiers. Starter is free until you hit $250K in cumulative billing, then Chargebee takes 0.75% of billing processed. Performance is a 12-month commitment invoiced monthly, working out to $599/month ($7,188/year total), and covers up to $100K in billing per month before the same 0.75% overage kicks in. Enterprise is quote-only. Chargebee also sells separate CPQ, Revenue Recognition, and Retention (Growth) products, each with their own free/custom split and priced separately from Billing. No specific free-trial length is published; the Starter plan itself is free rather than a time-limited trial.

Chargebee FAQ

Is Chargebee free?+

Chargebee's Starter billing plan is free until your business hits $250K in cumulative billing. After that, Chargebee charges 0.75% of the billing volume it processes.

How much does Chargebee cost once you outgrow the free plan?+

The next tier, Performance, is a 12-month commitment invoiced monthly, working out to $599/month ($7,188/year total), and covers up to $100K in billing per month, with the same 0.75% fee on anything above that.

Does Chargebee's price scale with revenue?+

Yes. Past the free tier's cap, Chargebee takes a percentage (0.75%) of the billing volume you process, so the bill rises as your revenue does. A Capterra reviewer calls this a 'success tax' that takes more as the business grows.
