Onfido verifies that the person signing up is who they claim to be, by checking a government-issued ID against a selfie or short video and running data checks against identity databases. You embed its SDK (web, iOS, Android, React Native) or call its API directly in your signup or KYC flow, and it returns a pass, fail, or manual-review result with a breakdown of what the checks found.
Onfido was acquired by Entrust in 2024. The product still runs on Onfido's document and biometric verification technology and current customers still refer to it as Onfido, but the company now sells it as part of Entrust's identity verification (IDV) suite, alongside Entrust's own fraud detection, authentication, and compliance products. Documentation, changelogs, and the marketing site have moved to Entrust domains, though onfido.com still resolves and forwards visitors there.
For a team building KYC or AML into a signup flow, Onfido is a mature, well-integrated option with broad document and country coverage, but pricing is opaque and you're now buying into a larger Entrust sales and support org rather than a standalone identity-verification vendor.
Who it's for
- ✓ Regulated businesses (fintech, gambling, crypto, banking) that need broad document and country coverage for KYC/AML and are willing to go through a sales-led contract process
- ✓ Teams that already use or are evaluating other Entrust products (authentication, PKI, fraud detection) and want one vendor relationship
Who should look elsewhere
- ✗ Early-stage or low-volume teams that want to see a price before talking to sales, or that need to start verifying identities today without a contract
- ✗ Teams that were choosing Onfido specifically to avoid a large enterprise vendor, since it's now part of Entrust's broader identity security portfolio
Pros
- + Wide document type and country coverage, useful for products onboarding users globally
- + SDKs cover web, iOS, Android, and React Native, so you're not stuck building capture UI from scratch
- + Actively maintained: the web SDK ships small releases roughly every one to two weeks
- + Established track record with large regulated customers (banks, gambling operators, payments companies) who cite faster onboarding and lower fraud after switching to it
Cons
- – No public pricing anywhere, so you can't budget or compare costs without opening a sales conversation and signing a contract
- – Multiple reviewers report slow or unresponsive billing and support, including unresolved invoicing errors and no phone support
- – Manual-review overage costs are hard to predict up front, since auto-approval rates and review-buffer sizing vary by customer base
- – The Onfido brand is being absorbed into Entrust's wider IDV suite, which means documentation, contracts, and support are shifting to a bigger organization mid-relationship for existing customers
Onfido pricing
No public entry price to compare, so budget depends on a sales quote.
| Plan | Price | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing is quote-only. Contact the vendor for a quote. | ||
Onfido does not publish prices. You pay per identity check (document plus selfie, or a fuller KYC bundle), and the rate depends on document types, geographies, and the volume you commit to. You have to talk to sales and sign a contract to get a number. Third-party estimates for per-check cost vary widely from source to source (from well under a dollar at high volume to several dollars at low volume), which itself is a sign there is no reliable public figure. Onfido's own site now redirects to Entrust's identity verification pages, and onfido.com/pricing redirects to an entrust.com/pricing URL that currently returns a 404. No self-serve checkout or public rate card exists as of this check; every price has to come from a sales conversation.
