Convex is a backend platform that bundles a database, server-side functions, file storage, and real-time sync into one system, so you write TypeScript functions instead of wiring up a database, an API layer, and a pub/sub system yourself. Reads are reactive: query results update in your frontend automatically when the underlying data changes, without you writing subscription or polling code.
It runs as a hosted service (Convex runs the database and function execution for you), with a free tier for prototypes and metered pricing once you pass small included quotas for function calls, storage, and data egress. Convex added a formal Enterprise plan in April 2026, with EU hosting available since February 2026 for teams that need data to stay in the region.

Who it's for
- ✓ Developers who want a database, backend functions, and real-time updates working together out of the box without assembling separate services
- ✓ TypeScript-heavy teams building a product from scratch that don't need to bring an existing SQL database
Who should look elsewhere
- ✗ Teams that need a standard Postgres database they can connect other tools directly to
- ✗ Projects with unpredictable traffic spikes where usage-based egress and compute costs are hard to forecast
Pros
- + Real-time reactive queries work automatically, no manual subscriptions or cache invalidation
- + Free tier is genuinely free with no time limit, useful for prototypes and side projects
- + Function calls, storage, and compute are all billed from one dashboard instead of stitching together separate vendor bills
Cons
- – Business plan pricing starts at a $2,500/month minimum, a large jump from the $25/seat Professional plan
- – Data egress and action compute are metered past small included quotas, so cost gets harder to predict as traffic grows
- – Enterprise pricing is not published and requires a custom quote
Convex pricing
What you pay for
You pay for developer seats on the Professional plan, then metered usage (function calls, database and file storage, data egress, and compute) on top of what your plan includes for free. The Free plan is free forever within small fixed limits, so pricing is mostly disclosed and self-serve up through Professional. Business and Enterprise both move to negotiated pricing, starting at a stated $2,500/month minimum, so those tiers are effectively quote-only past that floor.
At about $25/month to start, it is one of the cheaper options in Backend as a Service.
| Plan | Price | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Free & Starter | Free | For personal projects and prototypes, pay as you go past free limits · 1M function calls, 0.5 GB database storage, 1 GB file storage, 1 GB data egress included · 20 GB-hours of action compute included · Up to 6 developer seats, 1,000 concurrent sessions, 40 deployments |
| Professional | $25/seat/mo | For startups moving from prototype to production · 25M function calls, 50 GB database storage, 100 GB file storage, 50 GB data egress included · 250 GB-hours of action compute included · Up to 20 developer seats, 10,000 concurrent sessions, 300 deployments · Overage pricing per unit is roughly 9% lower than the Free plan's overage rates across every metered resource |
| Business & Enterprise | Custom | $2,500/month minimum on Business, no per-developer fee, up to 50 developers · Custom deployments, SAML/SSO, dedicated databases, and service SLAs · Enterprise adds unlimited developers, custom MSA, annual commit discounts, bring-your-own-cloud, SIEM integration · Optional paid priority support ($1,000/mo or 4% of usage) or premier support ($2,000/mo or 7% of usage) with faster incident response times |
The Free and Professional plans list fixed included quotas (function calls, database storage, file storage, data egress, action compute) and then charge metered overage per unit past those quotas. Professional is $25 per developer per month plus usage. Business starts at a $2,500/month minimum for up to 50 developers with no seat fee. Enterprise pricing is custom and quote-only. Deployments hosted in the EU region cost 30% more on paid plans, billed on-demand only. All figures are from the vendor's own pricing and enterprise pricing pages.

Yes. The Free & Starter plan has no time limit and covers 1M function calls, 0.5 GB of database storage, 1 GB of file storage, and 1 GB of data egress per month before you pay anything.
How much does Convex cost once you outgrow the free plan?+
The Professional plan is $25 per developer per month and raises your included usage to 25M function calls, 50 GB of database storage, and 50 GB of data egress, with metered overage charges past that.
