What is Puzzle?

Puzzle is accounting software built around AI agents instead of a human bookkeeper doing the categorizing by hand. It connects to your bank, cards, and tools like Stripe, Brex, Mercury, Ramp, and Gusto, then drafts journal entries and categorizations continuously so your books stay close to real time instead of only being accurate after a month-end close.

A human, either you or your accountant, still reviews and approves what the AI drafts before it posts. Puzzle markets itself to two groups: startups and small businesses that want live financial dashboards, and accounting firms that want to take on more clients without hiring more staff.

Who it's for

  • Venture-backed or fast-growing startups that want a live view of burn, runway, and revenue instead of waiting for month-end
  • Accounting firms that want to service more startup clients without adding headcount
  • Companies already using Stripe, Brex, Mercury, Ramp, or Gusto, since Puzzle's AI leans on those integrations to work well

Who should look elsewhere

  • Businesses with complex, non-standard transactions that need a memo field or heavy manual notation, since Puzzle is thin here
  • Teams that want to hand-correct AI mistakes easily. Users report miscategorized transactions can be hard to fix
  • Companies that need long-established, universally recognized software for lenders, auditors, or acquirers who expect QuickBooks

Pros

  • + No per-user fee. Core and up include multiple or unlimited users at one flat price
  • + Continuously updated books instead of a monthly close, with dashboards for burn, runway, and revenue
  • + Money-back guarantee on the Complete plan if your close isn't 50% faster by your second month
  • + Free to use below $20,000 in transaction volume, so very early startups can try it at no cost before converting to a paid plan

Cons

  • AI miscategorizations are reported as hard to correct once they happen
  • Missing basics some users expect, like transaction memo fields and advanced filtering
  • Support quality is inconsistent. At least one user reported Puzzle not showing up to a scheduled onboarding call
  • Younger and smaller than QuickBooks or Xero, so integrations and edge-case coverage are thinner

What you pay for

Puzzle's pricing is fully disclosed on its website, with four tiers running from $25 to $300 a month billed annually. You pay for AI credits, user count, and support level rather than per seat. Starter is free until an account crosses $20,000 in transaction volume, then converts to a paid plan. Accounting firms managing multiple client books get custom, quote-based pricing instead of a listed rate.

At about $25/month to start, it sits at the higher end of Accounting Software pricing.

Prices above are annual billing; monthly billing costs more ($30 / $72 / $120 / $360). Puzzle also runs a 50%-off-for-3-months promo on Core, Complete, and Scale, and quotes custom pricing for accounting firms managing multiple clients. No per-user fee on any plan. Starter isn't a permanent free plan: it's free only until an account crosses $20,000 in transaction volume, after which it converts to the paid Starter price.

Puzzle FAQ

Is Puzzle free?+

Yes, up to a point. The Starter plan is free until your account reaches $20,000 in transaction volume, after which it costs $25/month billed annually ($30/month billed monthly). It isn't a permanent free plan.

Does Puzzle charge per user?+

No. Puzzle's plans include a set number of users (or unlimited users on Complete and Scale) at one flat monthly price, unlike many accounting tools that charge per seat.

What happens if the AI miscategorizes a transaction?+

You can review and correct entries before they post, but some users report that once an entry is wrong, fixing it isn't straightforward.

Can I migrate from QuickBooks to Puzzle?+

Yes. Core includes a self-guided migration and Complete and Scale include a white-glove migration handled by Puzzle's team.
