What is Windsurf?

Windsurf is the AI-native code editor built by Cognition (the maker of Devin). Cognition bought Windsurf in 2025, and on 2026-06-02 rolled out an over-the-air update that renamed the app Devin Desktop, folding it into the Devin product line while keeping existing plans, pricing, and settings in place. The editor still ships as a VS Code-style fork with an agent layer called Cascade for multi-step coding tasks, plus an Agent Command Center for running local and cloud agents side by side.

You pay per seat, with a real free plan and tiers above it, rather than a quote-only setup. As of March 2026 the meter switched from a monthly credit pool to daily and weekly usage quotas that reset on their own, so you no longer run dry near the end of a billing cycle the way the old credit system did.

Windsurf for JetBrains is still a separate product from Devin Desktop.

Who it's for

  • Developers who want an agent that can run local and cloud coding sessions from one interface
  • Teams already comfortable paying $20+/seat/month for an AI-first editor and want daily-refreshing usage instead of a monthly credit pool

Who should look elsewhere

  • Developers who want to stick with their existing editor and just add an extension, rather than switch editors entirely
  • Teams that want fully disclosed, uncapped usage at a flat price with no quota system to track

Pros

  • + Free tier is real, not a time-limited trial
  • + Daily/weekly quotas remove the old end-of-month credit drought that Reddit users flagged as their top complaint
  • + Unlimited tab completions and inline edits on every plan, including Free
  • + Agent Command Center lets you track multiple local and cloud agent sessions from one dashboard
  • + Free access to Cognition's own SWE model on Pro and above, cutting reliance on paid third-party model tokens

Cons

  • Pro price rose 33% ($15 to $20/month) in the March 2026 overhaul, landing at the same price as Cursor
  • Rebrand to Devin Desktop happened mid-2026, so search results, docs, and community posts are split across old Windsurf branding and new Devin Desktop branding
  • Max tier at $200/month is a steep jump from Pro for teams that outgrow the standard quota
  • Teams plan pricing is two-part ($80 base plus $40/seat), which is easy to underestimate when budgeting
  • Concurrent sessions capped at 10 on Pro and Max, the same cap on both tiers despite the 10x price gap

What you pay for

You pay per seat: free forever on the entry plan, then $20/month for Pro, $200/month for Max, or $80/month plus $40/seat for Teams. Usage is metered by daily and weekly quotas that refresh on their own, not a monthly credit pool you can run out of. All the numbers above are published on the vendor's pricing page; only Enterprise is quote-only.

At about $20/month to start, it is one of the cheaper options in AI Coding Assistants.

Pro$20/seat/moHigher daily/weekly quotas · Full access to OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini models · Free access to SWE-1.7 and open-source models · Cloud agent sessions · Extra usage billed at API rates once you hit quota
Max$200/seat/moEverything in Pro · Significantly higher quotas
Teams$40/seat/mo$80/month base fee plus $40/seat · Shared workspace and collaboration · Centralized billing · Admin dashboard with usage analytics · Priority support
EnterpriseCustomSAML/OIDC SSO · Dedicated account management · Centralized admin controls · Dedicated deployment option

Pricing is disclosed on the vendor site, not quote-only except at Enterprise. Windsurf dropped its old monthly credit system on 2026-03-19 for daily/weekly quotas that refresh automatically; Pro rose from $15 to $20/month in that change. Teams is billed as an $80/month base fee plus $40/month per full seat, so the per-seat entry price above ($40) excludes that base fee. Concurrent sessions are capped at 10 on Pro and Max; Free does not support concurrent sessions at all; Teams and Enterprise are uncapped. Existing Pro/Teams subscribers at the time of the change were grandfathered at old pricing indefinitely.

Windsurf FAQ

Is Windsurf still called Windsurf?+

The desktop app was renamed Devin Desktop on 2026-06-02 in an over-the-air update. Same editor, same plans and pricing, same settings; the bundled local agent is now called Devin Local. Windsurf for JetBrains remains a separate product.

Does Windsurf have a free plan?+

Yes. The Free plan costs nothing and includes a lighter usage quota plus unlimited inline edits and tab completions, though model choice is limited compared with paid plans.

Why did Windsurf's Pro plan get more expensive?+

On 2026-03-19 Windsurf replaced its monthly credit system with daily and weekly usage quotas and raised Pro from $15 to $20/month. The old credit pool caused what users on r/windsurf called the 'end-of-month drought,' where credits ran out before the billing cycle renewed.

How is the Teams plan priced?+

Teams costs an $80/month base fee plus $40/month per full developer seat, with centralized billing and an admin dashboard. Enterprise pricing is negotiated directly with Cognition's sales team.
