What is Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is an SEO platform built around its own web crawl and keyword index. The core tools are Site Explorer for backlink and competitor research, Keywords Explorer for search volume and keyword ideas, Rank Tracker for monitoring positions, Site Audit for on-site technical checks, and Content Explorer for finding link and content opportunities.

Every plan meters usage two ways: a cap on tracked keywords and projects, plus a credit pool that gets spent as you open reports and apply filters. Higher tiers raise both the hard limits and the credit allowance. Ahrefs has also added AI-facing features (Brand Radar for AI search visibility, an in-app AI agent, GBP review monitoring, social scheduling) on top of the core SEO toolset.

Who it's for

  • SEO teams and agencies that need backlink and keyword data at meaningful depth
  • Content and link builders who live in Site Explorer and Content Explorer daily
  • Teams tracking brand visibility in Google AI Overviews as well as classic rankings

Who should look elsewhere

  • Solo site owners who only need to monitor their own domain, which Ahrefs Free already covers for free
  • Small teams on a tight monthly budget, since credits on the Lite plan get burned fast by normal report browsing
  • Buyers who want a flat, predictable bill without a credit meter to track

Pros

  • + Large, frequently updated backlink and keyword index that most competitors are still measured against
  • + One subscription covers backlinks, keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, and content research instead of separate tools
  • + Public, itemized pricing per tier, unlike vendors that hide everything behind quote-only sales calls
  • + Active product cadence, with new AI-search and AI-agent features shipping on a regular schedule

Cons

  • Credit system on lower tiers is easy to exhaust in one working session, since viewing reports and applying filters both consume credits
  • No free trial on any paid plan, so you commit to a month before you know if your usage fits the credit allowance
  • Extra seats and add-ons (Content Kit, Report Builder, Brand Radar AI as a standalone product) stack on top of the base price and aren't cheap
  • Jump from Lite ($129/mo) to Standard ($249/mo) is steep if you need more than 750 tracked keywords or 6 months of history

What you pay for

Each paid plan is a flat monthly price that includes one seat, and the tier you pick sets hard caps on projects, tracked keywords, historical data, and two separate credit pools (crawl credits, and per-user credits for viewing reports). Base prices and extra-seat fees are public on the pricing page, but annual savings and most add-on costs are not spelled out in dollars, so your real bill depends on how your team actually uses the tool. The free Ahrefs Free tier only covers your own verified site, not competitor research.

At about $29/month to start, it is one of the cheaper options in SEO Tools.

Prices shown are monthly, billed monthly. Ahrefs advertises up to 17% off for annual billing but does not publish the annual dollar figures on the pricing page. Extra seats cost $40/mo on Lite, $60/mo on Standard, $80/mo on Advanced, and $100/mo on Enterprise. Enterprise starts at $1,499/mo, includes 3 users, and requires an annual commitment, with custom pricing above that available by talking to sales. Add-ons like Content Kit and Report Builder start around $99/mo, and a standalone Brand Radar AI product starts at $199/mo, all billed on top of a plan. There is no free trial on paid plans; the free option is Ahrefs Free, which only covers a site you verify you own.

Ahrefs FAQ

Is Ahrefs free?+

There's a free tier called Ahrefs Free, but it only gives you data on a site you've verified you own, not competitor research. Actual SEO research starts at the paid Starter plan for $29/mo.

Does Ahrefs offer a free trial?+

No. The pricing page says Ahrefs never runs discounts or trials. You can start with the free Ahrefs Free tier or a paid plan directly.

Why do people complain about Ahrefs credits?+

Ahrefs meters usage with a credit pool on top of your plan's hard limits, and each report view or filter can consume a credit. Reviewers report the Lite plan's monthly allowance getting used up in a single research session, which locks them out until the next reset.

What does an Ahrefs plan actually include?+

Every paid plan, starting at Lite, includes Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, and Site Audit. Content Explorer, Portfolios, and batch analysis are only unlocked from the Standard plan up. What mainly changes between tiers is the number of projects, tracked keywords, months of historical data, and your credit allowance.
