What is Semrush?

Semrush is a keyword research, rank tracking, site audit, and backlink tool built around its own crawl and keyword database, one of the largest independent ones on the market. Most SEOs use it for competitor traffic and keyword gap analysis, technical site audits, and tracking rankings over time, with content and backlink tools layered on top.

Adobe finished acquiring Semrush in April 2026. Since then Semrush has pushed hard into tracking how brands show up in AI answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews), and every paid plan now includes some amount of that AI-visibility tracking alongside the classic SEO toolkit.

The pricing page was rebuilt around this AI push. The old Pro/Guru/Business names are gone from the main page, replaced by SEO, Starter, Pro+, and Advanced tiers that bundle a set number of AI prompts tracked per day into every plan.

Who it's for

  • Agencies and in-house SEOs who need one tool that covers keyword research, technical audits, rank tracking, and backlinks
  • Teams that also want to track how their brand shows up in AI chatbot answers without buying a separate tool

Who should look elsewhere

  • Solo bloggers or small sites that only need basic keyword and rank data (a cheaper single-purpose tool covers that)
  • Teams that already have a stable low-cost plan and don't want AI-visibility features they won't use

Pros

  • + One database covers keyword research, competitor traffic, technical audits, and backlinks, so you're not stitching together three tools
  • + Keyword and traffic estimate data is deep enough to build competitor gap analyses that smaller tools can't match
  • + AI-visibility tracking (prompts, AI Overviews, LLM mentions) is now built into the same login instead of a separate subscription

Cons

  • Real AI-visibility prompt tracking only starts at the $199 Starter tier; the $139 SEO plan has just basic AI search tracking, so teams that want both solid SEO tools and AI-visibility data now pay $60 a month more than the old SEO-only price
  • Keyword and report limits are tight on lower tiers, so active users hit caps and get pushed to upgrade sooner than expected
  • Extra seats, extra reports, and lead-gen data are all separate paid add-ons, so the sticker price undercounts what a small team actually pays

What you pay for

You pay per plan tier, not per seat, and the tier you need depends on how many sites and keywords you're tracking rather than headcount. Every price is published on the site, there's no quote-only tier for the core plans, and a genuinely free plan exists for light, occasional use. Adding teammates, more report credits, or lead-gen data costs extra on top of whatever plan you're on.

At about $139/month to start, it sits at the higher end of SEO Tools pricing.

PlanPriceHighlights

Starter$199/moEverything in SEO plus MCP access · 50 AI prompts tracked daily · 1 domain for AI brand performance · 300 AI visibility reports a day
Pro+$299/mo15 sites, 1,500 keywords tracked daily · Historical SEO data · Content optimization and keyword cannibalization checks · 100 AI prompts tracked daily
Advanced$549/mo40 sites, 5,000 keywords tracked daily · SEO share of voice · API access · 200 AI prompts tracked daily

Prices shown are month-to-month. Pay annually and the same plans drop to $117.33 (SEO), $165.17 (Starter), $248.17 (Pro+), and $455.67 (Advanced) per month, a savings of about 17%. Semrush restructured its lineup in 2026 to fold AI-search visibility features into every paid tier, so the old Pro/Guru/Business names are gone from the main pricing page. Extra seats, extra reports, and lead-gen data are separate paid add-ons on top of any plan.

Semrush FAQ

Is Semrush free?+

There's a free plan with 1 project and 10 reports a day, no card required, but it's thin. Most real work needs a paid plan starting at $139 a month.

Why did Semrush get more expensive?+

Semrush didn't raise the price of its base SEO plan, which is still about $139 a month. In 2026 it added a new Starter tier at $199 a month that bundles in real AI-visibility prompt tracking on top of the standard SEO toolkit. Some smaller agencies have pushed back on paying $60 more a month for that, and forums show people sticking with the cheaper SEO-only plan instead of upgrading.

Does Semrush charge per seat?+

No. Plans include one user by default and extra team members are a separate add-on starting around $45 a month each, on top of your plan price.

Who owns Semrush now?+

Adobe. The acquisition was announced in November 2025 for about $1.9 billion and completed in April 2026.
