What is Freshdesk?

Freshdesk is Freshworks' cloud help desk for teams handling support tickets across email, chat, phone, and social from one shared inbox. It was the original Freshworks product in 2010 and is still the company's customer-support flagship, alongside Freshservice for ITSM and Freshsales for CRM.

The product centers on ticketing, a customer self-service portal, and Freddy AI, Freshworks' AI layer. Freddy AI now includes an AI Agent for automated email replies, an AI Copilot for agents, and AI Insights for plain-language reporting. Prices step up sharply between tiers, and AI usage beyond the included Freddy AI Agent session allowance is billed separately.

Who it's for

  • Small and mid-size support teams that want ticketing, a knowledge base, and reporting without a long setup
  • Teams already using Freshworks products like Freshservice or Freshsales that want a shared platform
  • Support teams that want to try AI email-agent automation without buying a separate tool for it

Who should look elsewhere

  • Teams that need a free-forever plan. Freshdesk's free option is a time-limited 6-month offer capped at 1-2 agents
  • Teams that want predictable AI costs. Freddy AI Agent overage billing ($49 per 100 extra sessions) is usage-based on top of seat licenses
  • Buyers who need advanced workflow automation or custom objects on a budget. Those require the Pro tier, at nearly 3x the Growth price

Pros

  • + Three-tier pricing is published openly on the site, unlike many competitors that hide mid-tier pricing behind a sales call
  • + The 14-day trial gives full Enterprise-plan access instead of a stripped-down trial tier
  • + The Email AI Agent (added May 2026, Pro and Enterprise) gives support teams a built-in AI email responder instead of requiring a third-party add-on
  • + Multilingual help desk and a customer self-service portal come with the entry Growth plan

Cons

  • Price jumps from $19/agent/month (Growth) to $55/agent/month (Pro) for features like custom objects and advanced routing that many teams need early on
  • Freddy AI Agent sessions are metered separately at $49 per additional 100 sessions once the included 500 run out, adding an unpredictable line item
  • The advertised 'Free' plan is a time-limited 6-month program capped at 1-2 agents, not a permanent free tier, and Freshworks now requires a Customer Success Manager to move you onto it
  • Audit logs, approval workflows, and skills-based assignment are locked to the top Enterprise tier at $89/agent/month

What you pay for

Freshdesk charges per agent per month, billed annually. The cheapest paid tier, Growth, costs $19/agent/month and includes ticketing, a customer portal, shared inboxes, and multilingual support for up to 5,000 collaborators. There's no permanent free tier, but a 14-day trial gives full Enterprise access with no credit card required. Pricing is public on Freshworks' site, though Freddy AI Agent usage above the included 500 sessions is billed separately at $49 per 100 extra sessions.

At about $19/month to start, it sits mid-pack on price in Customer Support & Help Desk.

PlanPriceHighlights
Growth$19/seat/moTicketing · Customer portal · Shared inbox, threads and tasks · Multilingual help desk · Up to 5,000 collaborators
Pro$55/seat/moEverything in Growth · Custom support portals · Custom objects · Advanced ticketing and custom reporting · Multiple ticket routing mechanisms
Enterprise$89/seat/moEverything in Pro · Audit logs · Approval workflows · Skills-based ticket assignment · Additional security controls

Prices are per agent per month, billed annually, from the live pricing page checked on 2026-07-06. The page lists no separate month-to-month rate. Freshworks also runs a time-limited '$0 for 1-2 agents for 6 months' Free program. You need CSM assistance to switch onto it, per the site's own product-update notes, so it's not a permanent free tier and freeTier is set to false. Freddy AI Agent is billed on top of a paid plan: 500 sessions are included, then $49 per additional 100 sessions per cycle. Freddy AI Copilot is a separate per-agent add-on, and its price isn't published on the page.

Is Freshdesk still actively developed?

Last significant update: May 2026. In its May 2026 launch, Freshworks gave Freshdesk an Email AI Agent (Pro and Enterprise, live May 29) that writes context-aware, multi-turn automated email replies. It also rolled Freddy AI Insights conversational Q&A out to general availability for support teams (June 1) and added an early-access MCP Gateway: inbound MCP on Enterprise, and outbound MCP, which lets Freddy AI Agent act across external tools, on Growth, Pro, and Enterprise with an active Freddy AI Agent. Note: "Freddy AI Agent Studio," announced the same day, is a Freshservice-only feature (Growth/Pro, live May 14), not a Freshdesk one.
