What is PostHog?

PostHog bundles product analytics, session replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys, error tracking, a data warehouse, and an AI assistant into one product, priced per unit of usage instead of per seat. You turn on only the products you need, and each one has its own free monthly allowance before usage billing starts.

It started as an open-source, self-hostable analytics tool for engineers who wanted an alternative to Mixpanel and Amplitude without sending data to a third party. PostHog Cloud is now the default way most teams run it, though a self-hosted version still exists for teams that want to keep data in-house.

Who it's for

  • Engineering-led product teams that want analytics, replay, flags, and experiments in one tool instead of stitching several together
  • Startups with unpredictable or spiky traffic that don't want a per-seat contract
  • Teams that want to self-host or keep tight control over where event data lives

Who should look elsewhere

  • Teams that want a flat, predictable monthly bill regardless of traffic
  • Marketing or BI teams that mainly need polished dashboards and don't want to manage per-product billing limits

Pros

  • + One tool covers analytics, session replay, flags, experiments, and error tracking, so you avoid stitching together separate vendors
  • + Free tier resets every month and never expires, with 1M events and 5K recordings included at no cost
  • + You can set a hard billing limit on each product separately, so a traffic spike can't blow past what you're willing to spend
  • + Open-source with a self-hosted option, useful if you need to keep raw event data off PostHog's servers

Cons

  • Usage-based pricing means your bill moves with traffic, which makes it harder to budget than a flat per-seat plan
  • Without setting billing limits up front, a viral spike or misconfigured tracking call can generate a large bill fast
  • Support beyond community and email requires the $250/month Boost or $750/month Scale add-on

Not per-seat and there's no traditional free trial. Instead, every product has a permanent monthly free allowance (no credit card required), and pay-as-you-go billing only starts once you exceed it: about $0.00005 per analytics event, $0.005 per session recording, $0.0001 per feature flag request, and $0.10 per survey response at the entry tier, with volume discounts kicking in as usage grows (for example the analytics rate drops to $0.000009/event past 250M events). Team members are unlimited on every plan; the free plan is capped at 1 project, paid usage unlocks 6 projects and 7-year retention. Total cost depends entirely on your traffic and which products you turn on. Prices confirmed on the vendor's pricing page today.
