SAP SuccessFactors is SAP's cloud human capital management (HCM) suite. It covers core HR and payroll, recruiting, onboarding, performance and goals, learning, compensation, and succession planning as separate but integrated modules built on SAP Business Technology Platform.
SuccessFactors started in 2001 as an independent performance-management SaaS company founded by Lars Dalgaard. It went public in 2007 and SAP acquired it in 2012. It's now SAP's flagship cloud HCM line, while SAP still sells on-premise HCM through SAP ERP/S4 HANA.
Modules are licensed and priced separately per employee per month, so total cost and functional footprint depend on which modules you buy and how many employees you cover. There's no self-serve signup. Every deployment goes through an SAP or partner sales and implementation process.
Who it's for
- ✓ Large, multi-country enterprises already running SAP ERP/S4HANA that want HR data tied into finance and operations
- ✓ Organizations that need deep configurability across recruiting, learning, compensation, and succession in one connected suite
- ✓ Companies with dedicated HRIS/IT teams or SAP implementation partners who can manage a multi-module rollout
Who should look elsewhere
- ✗ Small or mid-size companies without budget for six-figure implementation and ongoing support costs
- ✗ Teams that want transparent self-serve pricing and a fast, low-touch setup
- ✗ Organizations that only need one lightweight function, like payroll or applicant tracking, rather than a full HCM suite
Pros
- + Broad module coverage (core HR, payroll, recruiting, onboarding, learning, performance, compensation, succession) under one vendor
- + Deep native integration with SAP ERP/S4HANA and SAP Business Technology Platform for large SAP shops
- + Agentic AI features added across recruiting, payroll, learning, and performance in the 1H 2026 release
- + Mature configurability and localization for multi-country, multi-entity organizations
Cons
- – No published pricing anywhere. Every deal requires a sales call and a custom quote
- – Bundle module pricing means costs scale fast. Third-party estimates put a full suite at $250,000-$500,000 in year-one cost for a 1,000-employee company
- – Implementation projects commonly run $100,000-$500,000 for mid-market and past $2 million for complex enterprise rollouts
- – No free tier or free trial, unlike many competing HR platforms aimed at SMBs
- – Mandatory support plans (e.g. SAP Preferred Care) add roughly 22% of the annual license cost on top of subscription fees, per third-party analysis

What you pay for
SuccessFactors bills per employee per month, per module you turn on, so your cost depends on which modules you buy and how many employees you cover. The cheapest way in is one module, such as Employee Central or Recruiting, and you add others like Performance & Goals or Learning as you need them, with a discount once you combine three or more. There's no free tier or free trial. SAP publishes no list prices anywhere, so every deal goes through a sales call for a custom quote.
No public entry price to compare, so budget depends on a sales quote.
| Plan | Price | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Employee Central (core HR) | Custom | Core HR record system · Foundation module required before adding others |
| Performance & Goals | Custom | Goal management · 360 feedback · Continuous performance |
| Recruiting | Custom | Candidate sourcing and hiring · SmartRecruiters integration in 1H 2026 release |
| Full HCM Suite | Custom | Employee Central, Recruiting, Learning, Compensation, Succession combined |
SAP publishes no self-serve price list for SuccessFactors. Sap.com's own pricing pages (e.g. /products/hcm/recruiting-software/pricing.html, /products/hcm/employee-central-hris/pricing.html) only show 'Contact us' or 'Request a quote' buttons, and blocked automated fetching during this research (403, re-confirmed). Licensing runs per employee per month, priced per active module, with bundle discounts of roughly 15-28% when you combine 3 or more modules, per third-party analyses (Redress Compliance, Pin.com) citing typical ranges of $6-$38 PEPM depending on module mix. Implementation costs often add six to seven figures on top for mid-market and enterprise deployments. No published vendor number could be verified, so startingPrice is left null.
