What is Workday?

Workday is a cloud-based enterprise system that combines human capital management (HR, payroll, talent, benefits) with financial management, spend management, and workforce planning in one platform. It was built from the start as multi-tenant SaaS, aimed at replacing older on-premise ERP/HR systems like PeopleSoft and SAP.

The platform targets mid-market and large enterprises, especially ones that want a single system of record spanning HR and finance instead of separate best-of-breed tools stitched together. Workday is sold and implemented through a direct sales team and a network of certified implementation partners; there's no self-serve option.

Workday has invested heavily in agentic AI. Its tools, Developer Agent, Agent-Ready Tools, and Agent Passport, let customers and partners build and govern custom AI agents on top of Workday data through its Extend platform and MCP-based access.

Who it's for

  • Mid-market to large enterprises consolidating HR and finance into one system of record
  • Organizations with complex global payroll, benefits, and compliance needs across multiple countries
  • Companies that already run large implementation projects and have the budget for a multi-year enterprise rollout

Who should look elsewhere

  • Small businesses or startups that want self-serve signup and clear, published pricing
  • Teams that need to go live in weeks rather than months and can't support a long implementation project
  • Buyers who want one simple HR tool rather than a broad ERP-style platform

Pros

  • + One platform for HR, payroll, financials, and workforce planning cuts the integration work between separate systems
  • + Strong reporting and analytics built on a single data model shared across HR and finance
  • + Mature multi-country payroll and compliance support for large global workforces
  • + Actively shipping new AI and agent features (Developer Agent, Agent-Ready Tools, Agent Passport) instead of treating AI as an afterthought

Cons

  • No public pricing anywhere. Every prospect has to go through a sales contact form and a custom quote process
  • Implementation is typically a multi-month, partner-led project, and buyer research suggests implementation costs can rival or exceed the first year of subscription fees
  • Configuration and change management (business processes, security groups, reports) need trained administrators or consultants, not casual admins
  • Overkill and too costly for small or simple organizations that don't need combined HR and finance functionality

What you pay for

Workday charges per employee per month, scaled to headcount, the modules you buy, and your implementation scope. There's no set entry tier and no free tier. Adaptive Planning offers a 30-day free trial through a request form, but core HCM and Payroll don't. Workday doesn't publish pricing anywhere, so every price comes from a sales quote.

No public entry price to compare, so budget depends on a sales quote.

Pricing is quote-only. Contact the vendor for a quote.

Workday does not publish pricing for HCM, Payroll, or Financial Management. There is no general public pricing page (workday.com/en-us/pricing.html returns 404). The only paths to cost information are a sales contact form (forms.workday.com/en-us/sales/sales-contact/form.html) and partner/reseller quotes. Even Workday's own dedicated page for one module, Adaptive Planning (workday.com/en-us/products/adaptive-planning/pricing.html), lists tier names (Adaptive Planning, Adaptive Planning Close & Consolidation) with 'Pricing varies' and a 'Request a Quote' link instead of dollar amounts. This confirms the quote-only model. Cost depends on the modules you pick, employee headcount, and implementation scope, and gets negotiated per deal. Third-party buyer-research sites (not a Workday source, so not used for startingPrice) estimate enterprise PEPM (per employee per month) fees at roughly $7-40 depending on company size and modules, with implementation often costing as much as the first year or more of the subscription. Treat these as unverified estimates, not vendor-quoted prices.

Is Workday still actively developed?

Last significant update: June 2026. At Workday DevCon, Workday launched a set of agentic developer tools: Developer Agent (build AI apps and agents in plain language), Agent-Ready Tools (guardrails for agents to access HR/finance data over MCP), and Agent Passport (third-party attestations that check agents against standards like OWASP LLM Top 10, NIST AI RMF, and MITRE ATLAS). Developer Agent and Agent-Ready Tools are in early access through Workday Extend Professional, with general availability planned for H2 2026.
