WPML is a WordPress plugin that adds multilingual support to an existing site. You install it alongside your theme and page builder, and it lets you translate pages, posts, menus, and plugin strings, either by hand, by sending content to a translation service, or with its built-in AI translation credits.
It's the oldest and most widely used paid translation plugin in the WordPress ecosystem, which means broad compatibility with themes, page builders (Elementor, Divi, Gutenberg), and WooCommerce. That breadth comes with real setup weight: you're managing a license per site, a separate credit balance for AI translation, and a plugin that touches nearly every part of your WordPress install.

Who it's for
- ✓ WordPress sites already built on Elementor, Divi, or WooCommerce that need translation without switching platforms
- ✓ Agencies managing several client sites who want one plugin and one license structure across all of them
Who should look elsewhere
- ✗ Non-WordPress sites, since WPML only works inside WordPress
- ✗ Teams that want translation cost to scale with usage alone rather than paying a per-site license on top of it
Pros
- + Deep integration with WooCommerce, Elementor, Divi, and most major WordPress themes
- + Multilingual Agency tier covers unlimited sites, which is cheap per-site for an agency managing many client installs
- + Pay-as-you-go AI translation pricing keeps the lowest per-credit rate you reach in a month as your starting rate for the next three months, so a high-usage month lowers your price going forward
Cons
- – License and support lapse after a year unless you renew, and the pricing page doesn't show renewal pricing up front
- – AI translation is billed separately from the plugin license, so the sticker price undercounts real cost for larger sites
- – Support runs through a ticket system and reviewers report slow or unclear responses on complex issues
WPML pricing
At about $3/month to start, it is one of the cheaper options in Website & Software Localization.

Prices are in EUR, billed per year, taken from the live pricing page on 2026-07-07. Renewal pricing isn't shown on the pricing page itself. Beyond the plugin license, AI translation credits are billed separately: the first 2,000 credits a month are free, then €0.75 per 1,000 credits, dropping to €0.30 per 1,000 at high volume. There's no free-forever plan and no free trial.

Is WPML free?+
No. There's no free tier. The cheapest plan, Multilingual Blog, is 39 euros a year for one production site.
Does the plugin price include AI translation?+
Only up to the credits bundled with your plan. Multilingual CMS includes 90,000 AI translation credits and Agency includes 180,000. Beyond that you buy more credits separately, starting at 0.75 euros per 1,000 credits and dropping at higher volumes.
What happens if I don't renew my WPML license?+
The site keeps running on the version you have, but you stop getting plugin updates, lose access to support, and can't register WPML on new sites or re-register it if the site's URL changes.
