Hotjar is a behavior analytics tool for websites and apps. It records real user sessions, builds heatmaps of clicks, taps, and scrolling, and runs on-page surveys and feedback widgets so you can see where people get stuck, confused, or click on things that aren't clickable.
Contentsquare originally acquired Hotjar in September 2021, and the two ran as separate products for years. On July 1, 2025, Hotjar Ltd (Malta) formally merged into the Contentsquare corporate group, consolidating billing and legal entities. New signups now create a Contentsquare account, and Hotjar's old standalone pricing page redirects to Contentsquare's. The core recording, heatmap, and survey tools still work the way they always did, but they're now sold as Contentsquare's "Digital Experience Analytics" plans, and the AI features are branded Sense rather than Hotjar AI.

Who it's for
- ✓ Product and UX teams who want quick visual answers on where users rage click or drop off, without setting up a full analytics stack
- ✓ Teams that already run Contentsquare or plan to consolidate session replay, surveys, and product analytics under one vendor
Who should look elsewhere
- ✗ Teams whose usage will land in the Pro or Enterprise tier, where pricing is custom and budgeting still means booking a call
- ✗ High-traffic sites that need every session recorded rather than a sampled subset once they pass their plan's session cap
Pros
- + Heatmaps and session recordings are still fast to set up with a single script tag
- + Rage click and dead click detection point straight at the parts of a page that frustrate users
- + On-page surveys and feedback widgets ship in the same tool, so you don't need a separate survey product for quick pulse checks
- + The free plan now covers 200k sessions a month, well above Hotjar's old cap of 35 sessions a day
- + Entry pricing (Free and Growth at $49/month) is publicly listed, unlike many competitors that gate every paid tier behind a sales call
Cons
- – Session recording is sampled once you go over your plan's allowance, which can hide real user problems on busy pages
- – Pro and Enterprise pricing is custom, so scaling past Growth's session cap still means a sales conversation
- – Behavior data isn't tied to revenue out of the box; one former customer on the old $80/month Business plan switched tools specifically to get revenue attribution alongside session replay
- – Pricing and account structure went through two changes in under 18 months (the 2025 legal merger into Contentsquare, then the March 2026 plan overhaul), so what you sign up for today may not match the structure a year from now
- – Email support response times run one to two business days on lower tiers, with priority support reserved for the top plan

Contentsquare's pricing page doesn't render its numbers as plain text (it's a client-side app, so simple fetchers see only "Start for free" and "Book a demo" buttons), but the page's own underlying data confirms real, published prices for two of the four tiers: Free ($0, 200k sessions/month) and Growth (from $49/month for 7k monthly sessions, billed monthly, with a 20% discount for annual card/PayPal billing and a further 10% off if you also buy a Growth-tier Voice of Customer or Product Analytics plan). Pro and Enterprise have no listed price and require sales. Session recording, heatmaps, and surveys are all billed as part of this "Digital Experience Analytics" bundle; Contentsquare's separate Product Analytics (formerly Heap) and Voice of Customer (surveys/feedback) products have their own overlapping Free/Growth/Pro/Enterprise tiers if bought as add-ons, which is a separate pricing track from the numbers above.

Hotjar FAQ
Is Hotjar still a separate product from Contentsquare?+
Not legally. Contentsquare originally acquired Hotjar in September 2021, and on July 1, 2025, Hotjar Ltd (Malta) formally merged into the Contentsquare corporate group. New signups now create a Contentsquare account, and Hotjar's old pricing page redirects to Contentsquare's, though the product still carries the Hotjar name for its heatmap and recording tools.
Does Hotjar have a free plan?+
Yes. As of Contentsquare's March 2026 pricing update, the free Digital Experience Analytics plan includes 200k sessions a month, up from Hotjar's old free tier that capped out at 35 sessions a day.
Does Hotjar publish real prices, or is it quote-only now?+
Partly published. hotjar.com/pricing redirects to Contentsquare's pricing page, which lists a Free plan and a Growth plan starting at $49/month for 7k monthly sessions (20% off if billed annually). Pro and Enterprise, for higher session volumes, have no listed price and require talking to sales.
