Datadog is a monitoring and observability platform that covers infrastructure metrics, APM traces, logs, real user monitoring, synthetic tests, and security in one product with a shared query language and dashboards. You install an agent on your hosts or containers, it ships data to Datadog, and you pay per host, per GB, or per event depending on which products you turn on.
The pitch is one vendor instead of stitching together Prometheus, Grafana, an APM tool, and a log pipeline. In practice that means one bill with many line items: infra hosts, APM hosts, log ingestion, log indexing, custom metrics, containers, and more, each metered separately.
Datadog is the market incumbent for observability at companies past a certain scale. It is not cheap, and the pricing model rewards teams that actively manage what they send and tag rather than turning everything on.

Who it's for
- ✓ Teams that want one platform for infra, APM, and logs instead of stitching together open source tools
- ✓ Organizations with the headcount to actively manage cardinality, retention, and which hosts/services get monitored
- ✓ Companies already running mostly on AWS, GCP, or Azure that want turnkey integrations
Who should look elsewhere
- ✗ Small teams on a tight, predictable budget, since usage-based billing across many products makes the monthly total hard to forecast
- ✗ Teams with highly dynamic autoscaling infrastructure, since host counts and container billing can spike costs without warning
- ✗ Anyone who wants a single flat price instead of per-product, per-metric billing
Pros
- + Covers infra, APM, logs, RUM, and security in one product with shared dashboards and one query language
- + 1,000+ integrations, so most cloud services and tools plug in without custom work
- + Free tier and 14-day trial with no credit card, so you can test it before committing
- + Mature product with 15-month metric retention on paid infra tiers
Cons
- – Pricing is split across many separately metered products (hosts, containers, custom metrics, log ingestion, log indexing), so the real bill is hard to predict from the pricing page alone
- – Host billing excludes only the top 1% of hourly readings each month, so a multi-day autoscaling spike, not just a brief one, can set the whole month's charge at that peak
- – Each unique tag combination on a metric counts as a separate billable custom metric, which catches teams off guard
- – Enabling cloud integrations like AWS can pull in large volumes of metrics you did not ask for and did not budget for
Datadog pricing
At about $15/month to start, it is one of the cheaper options in Observability & Error Monitoring.
| Plan | Price | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | Up to 5 hosts · 1-day metric retention · Core dashboards |
| Infrastructure Pro | $15/host/mo | Per host, billed annually ($18 on-demand) · 1,000+ integrations · 15-month metric retention |
| Infrastructure Enterprise | $23/host/mo | Per host, billed annually ($27 on-demand) · Machine learning based alerts · Live Processes, Governance Console |
| APM | $31/host/mo | Per host with Infrastructure attached, billed annually ($48 on-demand) · Live trace search |
| APM Enterprise | $40/host/mo | Per host with Infrastructure attached, billed annually ($60 on-demand) · Continuous Profiler · Data Streams Monitoring |
| Log Management | Custom | Ingestion from $0.10/GB/month · Indexing from $1.70 per million events/month at 15-day retention ($2.55 on-demand) |
Datadog is not one price, it is a bundle of separately metered products. Infrastructure Monitoring Pro is $15/host/month billed annually ($18/host on-demand). APM, log management, security, and every add-on (custom metrics, containers, synthetic tests, RUM, code coverage) bill separately on their own usage metric. Host counts use a high-water-mark calculation: Datadog drops only the top 1% of hourly readings (about 7 hours in a 30-day month) and bills the whole month at the peak of the rest, so a multi-day autoscaling spike, not a brief one, can set the entire month's bill. There is no single quoted 'starting price' for a real deployment, most teams end up combining several of these line items.

Is Datadog still actively developed?
Last significant update: June 2026. Datadog announced it is acquiring Adaptive ML, an AI startup building a reinforcement-learning platform (RLOps) for training and deploying specialized models, to push its AI Research work toward agents that can act on incidents, not just alert on them.

Datadog FAQ
Is Datadog free to use?+
Yes, for a limited case. The free tier covers up to 5 hosts with 1-day metric retention. Anything beyond that needs a paid infra plan starting at $15/host/month billed annually.
Why is my Datadog bill higher than the pricing page suggests?+
The pricing page quotes per-product rates, but a real deployment usually combines several: infra hosts, APM hosts, log ingestion and indexing, custom metrics, and containers, each billed on its own metric. Host counts also use a high-water-mark calculation that only drops the top 1% of hourly readings, so a sustained autoscaling spike lasting more than a day or two can set the whole month's total.
How long is the Datadog free trial?+
14 days, and Datadog does not require a credit card to start it.
What is the cheapest way to run Datadog?+
Stick to Infrastructure Pro at $15/host/month annual billing, watch custom metric tag cardinality closely, and route high-volume debug logs elsewhere before they hit indexing.
