What is Lemon Squeezy?

Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record for selling digital products, software licenses, and subscriptions online. Instead of just processing card payments, it becomes the legal seller on every transaction, which means it collects and remits sales tax and VAT in every country you sell to, handles chargebacks, and screens for fraud. You get a hosted checkout, a storefront, license key generation, and subscription billing built in, all for one transaction fee instead of a monthly bill.

Stripe bought Lemon Squeezy in 2024 and has been using it to build Stripe Managed Payments, its own merchant-of-record product. Lemon Squeezy keeps running as a separate product, but the company said openly in a January 2026 update that support and product updates slowed down through 2025 while the team focused on the Stripe project, and that moving existing users over to Stripe Managed Payments is now a stated goal.

Who it's for

  • Indie developers and small SaaS teams selling globally who don't want to register for VAT or sales tax themselves
  • Makers selling one-off digital products, courses, or software licenses who want a working checkout without building one

Who should look elsewhere

  • Businesses doing $50k+ a month in digital sales, where the 5%+ fee costs meaningfully more than a standalone processor plus a tax tool
  • Teams that need deep CRM integrations or full control over the checkout UI

Pros

  • + No monthly fee: you only pay when you make a sale, and every feature is available from the first dollar
  • + Handles global sales tax and VAT registration, collection, and filing for you as merchant of record
  • + License keys, digital delivery, subscriptions, and checkout are all built in, so you don't need to stitch together separate tools

Cons

  • 5% + $0.50 per transaction is meaningfully more than a standalone processor like Stripe (2.9% + $0.30), and extra charges apply for PayPal, international, subscription, and recovered-cart sales
  • Support replies run 24-48 hours by Lemon Squeezy's own FAQ, and the company has publicly acknowledged slower support and fewer product updates since the Stripe acquisition
  • No deep CRM integrations, so complex SaaS billing workflows still need custom work on top of the API

What you pay for

You pay only when you sell: 5% plus $0.50 per transaction, no monthly fee, and every feature unlocked from day one. That single line covers payment processing, global sales tax and VAT, fraud screening, and merchant-of-record status, so you're not stacking a separate tax tool on top. The published rate isn't the whole story: PayPal, international, subscription, and recovered-cart sales each add a bit more, and Lemon Squeezy's own FAQ admits fees can run above the headline number in some cases. Pricing is disclosed on the site, not quote-only, except for volume discounts on high-revenue accounts.

It has a free plan, so you can start at no cost in Payment Processing.

There is no monthly fee. You pay 5% + $0.50 per transaction, bundled into one charge that covers payment processing, worldwide sales tax and VAT collection and filing, and fraud checks. Lemon Squeezy's own FAQ says fees can run higher than 5% + $0.50 in some cases, and third-party fee breakdowns list extra charges on top of the base rate for international payments (+1.5%), PayPal (+1.5%), subscription billing (+0.5%), abandoned cart recovery (+5%), and affiliate-referred sales (+3%). Email marketing is free up to 500 subscribers, then billed by list size. Large-volume sellers can ask for custom rates.
