Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record for software and digital products. Instead of billing you a subscription fee, it takes a cut of every sale, 5% plus $0.50 per transaction, and in exchange it handles the checkout, recurring billing, license keys, sales tax and VAT collection and remittance, and payment fraud screening. You plug in a checkout link or embed, and it deals with tax registration and filing in the countries you sell into as the legal seller of record.
Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in late 2024. Since then the two have been merging under the hood: Lemon Squeezy's own team is now building Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe's own merchant-of-record product, which is live by invite and waitlist in 35+ countries. Public self-serve sign-up has been promised as coming soon but had not shipped as of an April 2026 co-founder update. Founders picking Lemon Squeezy today are effectively choosing a bridge to Stripe as much as a standalone billing tool.

Who it's for
- ✓ Solo founders and small teams selling a single SaaS product or digital download who want tax and checkout handled without picking a payment processor first
- ✓ Early-stage products with low or unpredictable revenue, since there is no monthly fee to carry before you have paying customers
Who should look elsewhere
- ✗ Teams doing meaningful volume who want a flat, predictable bill instead of a percentage that scales with revenue forever
- ✗ Businesses that need dunning, revenue recognition, or multi-entity billing depth beyond basic recurring charges
- ✗ Anyone uncomfortable being on a product whose stated direction is to move merchants onto Stripe's own billing
Pros
- + No monthly fee. You only pay when you make a sale, so there is no fixed cost while pre-revenue
- + Sales tax and VAT registration, calculation, and remittance are handled for you as merchant of record
- + Setup is fast: checkout links, license keys, and subscriptions work with minimal configuration
Cons
- – The advertised 5% + $0.50 rate climbs fast in practice: +1.5% for any non-US sale, +1.5% for PayPal, +0.5% for subscriptions, so a real subscription business selling internationally lands closer to 7-8% per transaction before payout fees
- – Payout fees stack on top: 1% per payout for non-US bank accounts, and up to 3% (capped at $30) for PayPal payouts outside the US
- – Multiple merchants report accounts flagged for 'review' or suspended with payouts frozen and little explanation, per Trustpilot reviews
- – Since the Stripe acquisition, the product's own roadmap points at migrating merchants to Stripe Managed Payments rather than continuing to invest in Lemon Squeezy as a distinct product

Lemon Squeezy FAQ
Does Lemon Squeezy charge a monthly fee?+
No. There is no monthly subscription cost. Lemon Squeezy takes 5% plus $0.50 of each transaction instead, with extra surcharges for international cards, PayPal, and subscription payments.
What does the transaction fee actually add up to?+
The base rate is 5% + $0.50. A non-US subscription payment stacks the +1.5% international fee and the +0.5% subscription fee on top, pushing the effective rate to around 7% plus the flat fee before any payout fee is deducted.
Is Lemon Squeezy still a separate product from Stripe?+
For now, yes. Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024, and the team is now building Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe's own merchant-of-record product, live by invite in 35+ countries with public sign-up described as coming soon. The long-term direction points toward consolidation onto Stripe's own billing stack.
Is email marketing included in the transaction fee?+
No. Email marketing is a separate feature, free for up to 500 subscribers and priced by subscriber count above that.
