What is Matomo?

Matomo is a web analytics platform you can either self-host for free or run as a paid cloud service. It tracks pageviews, events, ecommerce, and funnels much like Google Analytics, but the pitch is data ownership: your visitor data sits on your own server or in Matomo's EU-hosted cloud, not inside a third party's ad ecosystem.

The free self-hosted Community edition has no user or traffic caps, but you're on your own for hosting, upgrades, and most premium plugins (heatmaps, session recording, A/B testing) which are sold separately. The paid On-Premise bundles and Matomo Cloud package those plugins in, add support, and in Cloud's case remove the server management entirely. Cloud pricing scales with hit volume, and a hit counts every tracked interaction, a pageview, event, download, outlink, site search, or content-tracking request, not just a pageview, so busy sites with heavy event tracking can hit their plan ceiling faster than the raw pageview number suggests.

Who it's for

  • Teams that want to own their analytics data and avoid sending it to Google or another ad company
  • Sites already comfortable self-hosting a PHP/MySQL app that want unlimited traffic for free
  • Companies in regulated or privacy-sensitive markets that need EU data hosting and GDPR-friendly defaults

Who should look elsewhere

  • Teams that want simple, flat, predictable pricing without checking hit counts against their plan every month
  • Small sites that just want a lightweight, no-maintenance analytics widget and don't care about self-hosting

Pros

  • + Self-hosted Community edition is free forever with no user or traffic limit
  • + Full data ownership, with data export available on request and full deletion under GDPR
  • + One tool covers analytics, heatmaps, session recording, funnels, and A/B testing instead of stitching together several products
  • + EU-based cloud hosting (Frankfurt, Germany) helps with GDPR compliance out of the box

Cons

  • Cloud pricing is based on hits (pageviews plus events, downloads, outlinks, site searches, and content-tracking requests), so event-heavy sites can burn through a tier faster than pageview counts alone suggest
  • Self-hosting means you own updates, server sizing, and performance tuning yourself; Matomo's own marketing acknowledges this maintenance burden as the tradeoff against Cloud
  • Several premium features (heatmaps, session recording, A/B testing) are separate paid plugins on top of self-hosted Community, so 'free' quickly stops being free once you want them
  • Reviewers note that standard email support on paid plans isn't round the clock, and dedicated/priority support is sold as a separate, costly add-on

Matomo prices Cloud in USD and On-Premise in EUR, so the two lines aren't directly comparable at face value. Cloud has two plans: Business starts at $26/month for 50,000 hits and rises as you move a hits slider, up to 5 million hits/month, before Matomo asks you to contact sales; Enterprise is quote-only at every volume and adds SSO, a custom domain, and a dedicated success manager. Annual billing on Cloud gives 2 months free ($260/year on Business). A hit is any tracked interaction, a pageview, event, download, outlink, site search, content-tracking request, crash report, or similar, so ecommerce and event-heavy sites can use up their allowance faster than raw pageview counts suggest. Self-hosted Community is genuinely free forever with no user or hit limit, but premium plugins (heatmaps, session recording, A/B testing) are sold separately unless you buy one of the EUR-priced On-Premise bundles (Team, Business, Enterprise, VIP), which package those plugins, support, and updates together. On-Premise is priced in EUR per month: Team is EUR 275/month, Business EUR 1,450/month, and Enterprise EUR 3,400/month on monthly billing, and paying annually is about 17% cheaper (roughly EUR 230, EUR 1,209, and EUR 2,834 per month). VIP is quote-only. Do not write these as USD or with a dollar sign.

Matomo FAQ

Is Matomo really free?+

The self-hosted Community edition is free forever with no user or traffic cap, but you run and maintain the server yourself, and most premium plugins (heatmaps, session recording, A/B testing) cost extra unless bundled into a paid On-Premise plan. Matomo Cloud and the On-Premise bundles are paid.

How does Matomo Cloud pricing work?+

Cloud has two plans. Business starts at $26/month for 50,000 hits and scales up as you move a hits slider, up to 5 million hits/month, with annual billing giving 2 months free ($260/year at the entry tier). Enterprise is quote-only at every volume and adds SSO and a dedicated success manager. Push past the highest slider tier on either plan and Matomo asks you to contact sales for custom pricing. A hit is any tracked interaction, not just a pageview.

Does Matomo support GDPR compliance?+

Matomo markets itself around data ownership and GDPR-friendly defaults, and its Cloud hosting is based in Frankfurt, Germany. Self-hosting lets you pick your own data location entirely.

What happens to my data if I cancel a paid plan?+

Reviewers have reported losing dashboard access to historical data after cancelling a subscription and not receiving an export on request, so ask for a data backup before you cancel.
